  • Sécheresse oculaire : causes, symptômes et solutions naturelles
  • Dry eyes: causes, symptoms and natural solutions

Many people suffer from dry eyes and dry mucous membranes. What about you? The purpose of this article is to help you better understand these symptoms.

The origin of dry eyes and/or dry mucous membranes?

Dry eyes or dry mucous membranes can be caused by many factors. Environmental impacts are among them. We are constantly exposed to ambient air that is too dry. Air conditioning and overheated rooms deprive the eyes and mucous membranes of the necessary moisture. Prolonged work in front of a computer screen, strong wind, drafts, and wearing contact lenses can also cause dry eyes. A dry mouth can be triggered by mouth breathing, alcohol consumption, or cigarette smoke. These symptoms can also occur following hormonal changes during menopause or pregnancy. Furthermore, certain medications cause dry eyes/dry mucous membranes. Similarly, certain diseases (diabetes, thyroid diseases, rheumatic diseases) can be the cause of dry eyes and/or dry mucous membranes. In this case, the dryness of the eyes/mucous membranes is caused by inflammation and damage to the glands. The lacrimal and salivary glands are particularly affected, but the intestinal, vaginal, or respiratory tract glands can also be affected.

What are the symptoms of dry eyes?

Several symptoms suggest signs of dry eyes. It manifests in various ways:

    • sensation of stinging, itching, or burning eyes
    • sensation of having a foreign body in the eyes
    • discomfort upon waking in the morning with sticky eyelids
    • sensitivity to light and elements such as wind or cigarette smoke
    • absence of tears in situations that usually trigger secretion: peeling onions, emotions…
    • Presence of tears when reading, in the wind…
    • difficulty when wearing contact lenses
    • eye fatigue

In general, dry eyes cause discomfort when performing daily activities such as being on a computer, driving, reading…

    The mouth?

You have been experiencing a dry mouth for several weeks: the mouth produces less saliva. A dry mouth can cause problems when eating and speaking. Thus, you may be unable to swallow dry foods without water.

    The nose and respiratory tract?

You may also feel dryness inside your nose. Your sense of smell may be diminished. Likewise, itching or burning, crusts, a “stuffy nose,” nosebleeds, hoarseness, and a dry cough may occur.

    Vagina?

In women, vaginal mucous membranes can be dry and irritated. Sexual intercourse can become painful and the mucous membranes are at risk of bleeding.

Be aware that taking certain medications can result in dehydration of the mucous membranes. These include:

    • antidepressants
    • opioid painkillers
    • sleeping pills
    • anti-acne medication
    • medications to fight certain conditions like Parkinson's disease, certain heart diseases…

Certain diseases are also at the origin of dry eyes such as rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis which cause inflammation of the eyelids, but also autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or sarcoidosis, HIV and hepatitis C.
